Open Educational Resources (OER)

Affordable & Open Educational Resources at Whitworth

Definitions:

Affordable Educational Resources are those that can be used for free in courses without violating copyright. These include library resources, websites, and other resources already available to students and faculty for coursework. The inclusion of Affordable Educational Resources promotes accessibility of instructional resources, advocates the use of library resources, and does not incur further cost.

Open Educational Resources are defined as:“ teaching, learning and research materials in any medium – digital or otherwise – that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation and redistribution by others with no or limited restrictions." (UNESCO, 2020). OER include textbooks, courses, quizzes, and activities.

Goals:

  • improve student success through increased access and affordability
  • improve teaching efficiency and effectiveness through the ability to focus, analyze, augment, and develop course materials that align directly with course learning outcomes
