Zotero for MAC: Installation

You will need to install two things: Zotero and a web browser connector which work together.

You also will need either Microsoft Word or Google Docs.  Zotero will not work with Pages.

  2. Install Zotero:
    • Locate the downloaded .dmg file, usually in your Downloads folder.
    • Double-click the .dmg file to open it.
    • A window will appear showing the Zotero application and the Applications folder.
    • Drag and drop the Zotero icon into the Applications folder.
  3. Launch Zotero:
    • Open the Applications folder.
    • Double-click Zotero to launch the application.
    • If you receive a security warning, click "Open".
Download and Install the Web Connector for Zotero
  • Zotero uses a connector to scan an item's metadata (embedded information about that item) and identify different types of items as you browse library databases or the internet. Installing the web connector puts a Zotero capture icon on browser's toolbar (shown below underlined in green). Clicking the Zotero capture icon allows you to save items to Zotero. Click on the Zotero Website below to add the Connector.
  1. Install the Connector:

    • Under "Zotero Connector", click on the button for your browser.
      • Chrome: "Install Chrome Connector"
      • Firefox: "Install Firefox Connector"
      • Edge: "Install Edge Connector"
      • Safari: Instructions are slightly different (see below).
  2. Add the Extension:

    • Chrome/Edge/Firefox:
      • You'll be redirected to the browser's extension store.
      • Click "Add to [Browser Name]".
      • Confirm any prompts to add the extension.
    • Safari (Mac Only):
      • The Zotero Connector for Safari is bundled with the Zotero application.
      • Open Safari.
      • Go to Safari > Settings (or Preferences) > Extensions.
      • Check the box next to Zotero Connector to enable it.
  3. Confirm Installation:

    • An icon representing Zotero (a "Z" or Zotero logo) should appear in your browser's toolbar.
