The North American Classification System (NAICS) is the standard used by Federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy. You can look up additional codes at https://www.census.gov/eos/www/naics/.
The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) is an industry classification system in which all Federal economic statistics are based on up to 1996. Use this site to do a keyword search to find an SIC code for an industry.
It is important to know these codes in order to retrieve statistical information produced by the Census as well as search certain databases, like IBISWorld or Passport, by these codes.
