Searching Tips

To find scholarly sources:

The library databases generally have a checkbox to narrow your results to Scholarly or Peer Reviewed.

To evaluate a book's critical reception:

Search the title in quotes in Academic Search Complete, under "Publication Type" select "Book Review."

Search the title in quotes in Research Library, under "Document Type" select "Review."

To evaluate internet sources:

The internet provides access to all kinds of information, from very scholarly to entertaining. Unfortunately, it is equally credible or trustworthy. The reader is responsible for evaluating every source. Check author, relevance, accuracy, currency, and purpose. "About" pages on the site can be useful for evaluation.

What is Peer Reviewed?

A peer-reviewed or refereed article:

is evaluated by a group of experts in the field, who assess its content for scholarly soundness and academic value.

Searches in many databases can be limited to "Peer Reviewed" materials.
