Change Title Captialization

How to change the capitalization of the citation title without retyping...

  1. Click on the citation.
  2. Right click on the title field in the right hand column.
  3. Select "Title case" to capitalize all important words or "Sentence case" to capitalize the first word of the title.

Adding Tags

Adding Colored Tags

To assign a color to a tag, right-click the tag in the Tag Selector and select “Assign Color…”. In the pop-up window that opens, select the desired tag color, and click “Set Color”. Up to six tags can be assigned colors. To remove a color from a tag, select “Remove Color” in the same pop-up window.

Items that carry colored tags show small colored squares (in the color of the tags) in front of their titles in the center column. Colored tags make it easy to quickly scan a collection or library and see which items have been assigned a certain tag. And since colored tags are grouped together at the top of the Tag Selector, they are always within grasp.

Adding Notes

You can add notes in Zotero directly into PDFs or in a separate note.

Add Notes to a Zotero Record:
  • Right click an item and choose "Add Note," or click an item and go to the right column (see image below), click on the sticky note icon, and then the "+" to add notes to items in your library.

Add notes to annotate a PDF:
  1. Open the attached PDF in the item and select the sticky note icon.
  2. Click on the note to add text or tags as needed.
  3. Select the 3 dot meatballs menu icon to adjust note color, edit page number, or delete.

The notes to annotate a PDF can be located by clicking on the PDF under and item and looking under annotation.

Notes Tips and Tricks

  • Tags in notes can help make notes searchable and help with organizing.
  • Notes don't have titles so the first line becomes the title.
  • Press Shift + to view multiple notes at the same time.
  • Consider using notes for direct quotations and include exact page number(s).
  • Notes can be use for summaries or ideas about items.

Library Lookup

The Library Lookup option lets you locate items in an online library catalog so you can track down a physical or online full-text copy of the resource. You'll need to select your library's OpenURL resolver (North America > United States > Whitworth University) from the Advanced tab of the Zotero preferences (or the General tab in Zotero 7).
